with a 5 year warranty, the new new asus tech z170 atx intel cpu based motherboard ideal for rugged environment such as dusty shop floors, industrial applications or applications that require a long life support. advanced thermal management features in both hardware and software make the board useful in applications where standard pc motherboards would be less capable.
the z170 features
the z170 features include:
- dual channel ddr4 support
- lga 1151 socket
- intel z170 chipset
- front usb 3.0
- 2x usb 3.1 (1 x type - a and 1 x type - c)
- sata express
- quad sli/cfx support
- 10k ti caps
- steel frame
- multiple fan cable headers allow for output control, monitoring and powering of pwm 4-pin fans
- fan extension header gives flexibility for in chassis cable design
- dedicated pump header for applications using liquid cooling
- thermal sensors are in place for the cpu, vrm, pch, motherboard, optional temp sensor for sensor placement wherever an engineer may want it
- sensor feedback to fans allows for a system to be designed such that air flow is increased based on temperature reading.
thermal management
the z170 features an asus innovation called tuf thermal armor. tuf thermal armois is more than a futuristic sheild: it employs employs dual fans to provide maximum airflow and rapid cooling board-wide, and a new interior shunt design to boost air cooling to the m.2 slot. reversible-airflow technology blows dust up and away from the heatsink vrm, while the exclusive flow-valve design controls the heat-pipe's air contact — great for liquid-cooling setups.
the z170's thermal management strategy includes tuf fortifier. this is a reinforced backplate that ensures motherboard rigidity under heavy loads. it also reduces internal system temperatures by up to 13 degrees c.
thermal management of the z170 is further enhanced with the following:
- multiple fan cable headers allow for output control, monitoring and powering of pwm 4-pin fans
- total of 13 fans in all can be controlled
- fan extension header gives flexibility for in chassis cable design
- dedicated pump header for applications using liquid cooling
- thermal sensors are in place for the cpu, vrm, pch, motherboard, optional temp sensor for sensor placement wherever an engineer may want it
- sensor feedback to fans allows for a system to be designed such that air flow is increased based on temperature reading.
data from the sensors is managed by a system software application known as thermal radar 2. thermal radar 2 allows each fan to be controlled individually. fan control can be done manually based on test thermal data an engineer gathers or automatically based on the installed fan characteristics. thermal status reports are fed back to a dashboard, alerting a system administrator to a workstations conditions.
